At 6 a.m. the shrill ring of the emergency department’s red “patch phone” pierced the air. An ambulance was coming in hot with a three-month-old baby found unresponsive in her crib.
Not breathing. No pulse. Intubated by the paramedics. CPR ongoing.
Five minutes later they crashed through the door, and we took over. We continued CPR while confirming placement of the endotracheal tube and administering doses of epinephrine via an intraosseous needle inserted into the baby’s tibia.
All to no avail.
After confirming cardiac standstill with bedside ultrasound, we ceased our efforts. Official time of death: 6:16 am.
Horrific stuff.
